Vagamon or Wagamon is a hill station located in Meenachil taluk and Kanjirappally taluk of Kottayam and Peerumade taluk of Idukki districts of Kerala, India. The Vagamon or Wagamon Hills Station is a popular tourist destination and hill station and is known for its cool and fresh climate round the year. It was mostly made famous by the British as they started their tea plantations here and is yet to be overpowered by commercialization, which provides ample opportunities for star gazing and simply enjoying the wonders of nature. Still untouched by commercialization, the sleepy town is surrounded by valleys, green meadows, pine forests, mists, fogs, tea estates, waterfalls and overall greenery.
The landscape is mostly hilly bald with green meadows. Vagamon is also home to a variety of flowers and orchids. Three hills – Thangal, Murugan and Kurisumala hills – are the representation of the chief religions in Kerala, i.e. Hindu, Muslim, and Christian which represent the cultural harmony. Vagamon has amenities for trekking, paragliding, mountaineering and rock climbing. However, business interests are trying their best to exploit and sell and market Vagamon for tourist. The efforts made by the Kurishumala Ashram have helped the farmers of Vagamon to improve their earnings by ensuring a better price for milk and marketing opportunities.
Kurisumala is best known for the Ashram that is situated quite high in the hills. It is known for the monks who lead a life of severe austerity. Nevertheless, the monastery takes visitors from time to time. The place is actually located 8 km away from the city center of Vagamon and is especially known for the scenic view of the sunset that one gets to enjoy. Thangal Hill seems perfect for a set for a Western movie. The cliffs and rock edges make for a very adventurous backdrop and those who are daring enough try to conquer the various rock cliffs here. This region is a bit dry during the winters and the grasslands around can grow up to great heights during the monsoons.
As the name suggests, the Barren Hills are indeed quite barren and much of the greenery and extensive parks that are seen in the other parts of Kerala are mostly absent here. Those who have an attraction for the rough aspect of nature will find that they find this aridness and lack of humidity quite liberating.
Maramala waterfalls are located seven km away from the Teekoy rubber estate, the falls are undoubtedly one of the most scenic in the entire state. Like many other nature trails in the city, the path to this falls also leads through wonderful locations and it is a real pleasure to be able to take that all in without having to exert oneself very heavily. Vagamon is on the fringe of the Western Ghats and the foothills on its lower side reach up to Teekoy with a gradual descent. This narrow strip of descending land gives a vital connectivity to the plains as both sides of Vagamon up to kuttikkanam on the south-west and moolamattom on the north east, are marked by steep and inaccessible hill slopes.
