Vizhinjam is a natural port located close to international shipping routes in Thiruvananthapuram city in Kerala. Kovalam beach lies 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) from Vizhinjam while the area is known for its Ayurvedic treatment centres and internationally acclaimed beach resorts. Vizhinjam lighthouse is started functioning on 30 June 1972.
Vizhinjam was a busy seaport in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Before the current light was installed, there were no lighthouses at this location. A daymark beacon (flag mast) must have been there in the 18th century. After the 19th century, this port was in a neglected state. A lighted beacon was constructed in 1925 at nearby Kolachal. Subsequently, a day mark beacon was provided at Vizhinjam during 1960. The tower is cylindrical with a height of 36 meters. The paint markings are red and white bands. The lighthouse is equipped with metal halide lamps and direct drive mechanism. The Vizhinjam International Transshipment Deep-water Multipurpose Seaport is an ambitious project taken up by Government of Kerala. It is designed primarily to cater container Transshipment besides multi-purpose and break bulk cargo. The port is being currently developed in landlord model with a Public Private Partnership component on a design, build, finance, operate and transfer (“DBFOT”) basis.
